Hampton Waterworks
Part of the extensive installations built by the Metropolitan Water Board to satisfy the increasing demand of 19th century London, these works are still very much in use, operated by Thames Water. The old buildings now house much more modern equipment than that originally installed.

Hampton Waterworks 1983
This shows two former steam pumping stations on this very extensive site. Trees now obscure the second range of building from this site. In 1852 the First Metropolis Water Act was passed, forbidding the abstraction of fresh (!) water from the tidal River Thames. This provided the impetus for development of waterworks at Hampton and by 1855 the Southwark& Vauxhall, the Grand Junction and the West Middlesex water companies had all established works here. In 1903 the Metropolitan Water Board was formed and assumed responsibility for all the Hampton works. Control passed to Thames Water Authority in 1973.

Pumphouse at Hampton Waterworks
The style of architecture would not be out of place as part of a stately home. This building would originally have housed steam engines for pumping. As far as I am aware, there are now no steam engines on site, but the buildings remain in use to house more modern equipment.

Curves weight loss and fitness studio
This appropriately-named building is now a weight loss and fitness studio. I don't know what its previous use was, but its frontage is similar to an old picture house.
