Normansfield Theatre
Normansfield Theatre was built in 1877-9 an entertainment hall for patients of the Normansfield Hospital. It is a rare example of a private Victorian theatre containing original painted scenery and other ornate fixtures and fittings. The hospital was established by Dr John Langdon Down in 1868 as a family home and a place where people with learning disabilities could be cared for and educated at a time when most of them would have been condemned to an asylum. He encouraged his patients and students to learn music and drama as part of their education.
