One of the Lodges of Ham House, Petersham Road
This lodge stands close to Petersham Road and was built to guard the approach to Ham House from the east. I don't know the history of the building, but the fancy Dutch-style gables would suggest a date before 1700. The bricks are on the small side, another early feature. Compare Image

Farm Lodge, Petersham
The shaped gable and brickwork are typical of minor buildings on the Ham House estate. Compare, for instance: Image

One of many grand 17th and 18th century mansions in Petersham. This one was leased by the Duchess of Montrose from 1838.

Montrose House, Petersham
The most ostentatious of the Georgian houses along this stretch of road - but, to my mind, by no means the most handsome.

The lodge looks to be of the same period as nearby Ham House Image so may be associated with it.

The Petersham road
Caught in a rare moment of peace and quiet. The view is eastwards from the sharp bend where the road turns southward towards Ham and Kingston. The narrow road is the most direct route connecting Richmond and Kingston - involving no river crossings or passage through Richmond Park (which in any case is closed in hours of darkness). The road is a bus route, but from what I've observed it seems that buses can't pass each other on the tight bend - one has to hang back and give way. The gate-pier in the foreground belongs to Rutland House.
