Former church of All Saints, Petersham
A large building in Romanesque style, allegedly built in anticipation of the development of Sudbrook Park as a housing estate (which did not happen). Unusually the whole site, including the church, vicarage and village hall Image, is Crown Land. [source: Country Life magazine, 13 November 1986]. The church was dedicated and licensed for weddings, but not consecrated nor under faculty. Designed by John Kelly who also designed nearby St Luke's church in Kingston, the statutory listing describes it thus: "Red brick and terracotta. Arcaded campanile with pyramidal roof, surmounted by a statue. 6-bay nave. Chancelled semi-circular apse and ambulatory. A baptistry … having a sunken lower level for total immersion plus an elevated upper level with a font for baptism by effusion." As early as 1924 the Vicar had complained of the difficulty of maintaining two large churches in one parish. Regular services ceased some time before 1962, at which time it was considered for Parish Church status (in place of St Peter's) but this was not implemented. It continued to be used for weddings until 1984 and shortly after (1983) it was listed. The last quinquennial inspection was in 1985 and all church use ceased by 1986. It was sold (with no need for a formal redundancy procedure) c.1996 for conversion to a single dwelling (All Saints House). There had been a suggestion in 1990 of selling the organ to St Augustine’s, Tooting but that did not happen, so the fate of the organ is unknown. The building was still standing at 2006 when planning permission was granted for additional windows, and only at that time was it officially removed from the register of buildings licensed for marriages. The Diocesan archive includes the last (1985) quinquennial report, site plan, details of the bells (9 hemispherical chimed bells including a flat 4th), and various correspondence.
