The High Green
The name on the seat is "Yatton House" Yatton being the local pronunciation of Great Ayton.

High Green

In the centre the Royal Oak is easily identified. The two shops next door have been rebuilt for the NatWest bank, the newsagent Worthy Pearson having moved round the corner to Park Square. Further right and only partially visible is the chemists which in 1960 was a house with a small front garden.
On the other side of the Oak the buildings look structurally the same and are now occupied by Petch, the butchers.

The Royal Oak, Great Ayton
There's a rather nice sundial on the front of the building dated 1771, which may well indicate the date of the building which is of sandstone, now painted white. The roofline is certainly later. The hotel stands in the upper part of this large village overlooking the Upper Green.

Royal Oak Hotel
In 1859 the holiday for 'Royal Oak' or 'Oak Apple Day' was revoked by Parliament. At Great Ayton the school pupils resisted this and the holiday continued to the end of the century. There was a well known rhyme.

Though born in Marton near Middlesbrough, James Cook spent all of his boyhood in Great Ayton. The picture also shows Great Ayton's high street.
