In 1859 the holiday for 'Royal Oak' or 'Oak Apple Day' was revoked by Parliament. At Great Ayton the school pupils resisted this and the holiday continued to the end of the century. There was a well known rhyme. 'Twenty Ninth of May Royal Oak Day If you don't give us a holiday We'll all run away'
