A wide street in the middle of Hartlepool. The street looks like it was once the commercial centre of the town but the main retail area is now around the Middleton Grange shopping centre.

Church Street, Hartlepool ? 1971
Despite major redevelopment of Church Square and Church Street, this particular row of buildings has survived intact. The Devon was a bar, apparently in the basement, which appears to have had a less than salubrious reputation by the 1970s.
The bus is Hartlepool Corporation 81, a Daimler CVG6 with Roe bodywork new in 1953, so already long in the tooth for a municipal bus.

Hartlepool station
Now reduced to a single through platform and one bay, though another track is available for freight use. The proposed Teeside Metro will provide (if it ever happens) a greatly enhanced service to Middlesbrough and beyond.

Hartlepool Corporation bus no.23 at Church Square ? 1971
The bus is a Leyland Leopard with relatively unusual Strachan's bodywork delivered new in 1964 to what was then West Hartlepool Corporation. Unlike many town centres, the scene remained remarkably unchanged 50 years on.
