Shops on south side of Front Street, Sedgefield
Both shops are currently take-aways: the 'East India Takeaway' on the left and 'Pizza Castle' on the right. Behind and to the right is St Edmund's Church. The 1895 1:2500 OS map shows that these are the sole remainders of a row of buildings that extended along the whole length of the street below the churchyard and included the Grammar School and Coopers Hospital (almshouses). Parish Hall, Front Street, Sedgefield
The Parish Hall was founded in 1849 but rebuilt in 1895. The distinctive front was a reflection of its important status in the community http://www.sedgefield.net/hertrail/phall.html
Proposed closure by the Town Council in 2006 was overturned by overwhelming public objection and the hall is regularly used for meetings by local groups and for dramatic and music presentations.

Mediaeval Fair, Sedgefield
July 1973. St. Edmund's Church, in the background, was built between 1246 and 1256 and is dedicated to Edmund Rich (1175 - 1240), Archbishop of Canterbury who was canonized in 1247.
