Surtees Bridge
The Surtees Road Bridge carries the A66 across the river Tees. The structure is a 2008 rebuild of the 1981 bridge that suffered stress issues due to excessive settlement. Adjacent are two iterations of the Tees Bridge that carry the Tees Valley railway across the river. The 2009 built Tees Bridge takes the current railway infrastructure and sandwiches the 1906 Tees Bridge between itself and Surtees Bridge. The tracks on the 1906 Tees bridge were lifted following completion of the 2009 bridge.

Surtees Bridge
Carrying the A66 over the River Tees, the bridge is currently being widened at a cost of £14.3m. Apart having only two lanes (in each direction) the existing bridge could not meet the specification for the latest 40te lorries. The work is expected to be complete in Autumn 2007. The 344t sections of the bridge was lifted into place by a 1200t Gottwald AK680 crane, seen here on the right. Why "Surtees"? There are two theories. Firstly it is named after the Surtees family, lords of the manor of Dinsdale in medieval times. Alternatively it's a corruption of the french "sur Tees" meaning on the Tees.

Surtees Bridge
Construction of the new Surtees Bridge over the Tees is continuing. The new bridge carrying two lanes is opened and here the old bridge has been cut away and removed. It looks as though the old piers will be reused. Why "Surtees"? There are two theories. Firstly it is named after the Surtees family, lords of the manor of Dinsdale in medieval times. Alternatively it's a corruption of the french "sur Tees" meaning on the Tees.

Disused Railway Bridge Over the River Tees
Viewed from the south bank, although because the meandering of the river actually looking south west. The new railway bridge is immediately behind whilst the A66 road bridge is behind that.
