The corner Co-op
This photograph shows a view of the Co-op shop at the corner of Deepdale Road in Loftus. The picture was taken from the opposite side of the road (on the A174), looking in a north-north-westerly direction towards the leisure centre and swimming baths.

Flood Defences, Kilton Beck
This is probably to prevent fallen trees from being washed downstream where they are liable to cause blockage. A few years ago Skinningrove the village downstream had major floods.

Waytail Beck, Whitecliff Wood
Waytail Beck looks clean however just before its confluence with Kilton Beck a run off from the Liverton Ironstone Mine shows obvious pollution. Although hazardous for wildlife the minerals are, so I'm told, good for your complexion.

Culvert, Kilton Beck
The culvert was constructed in 1913 when the Kilton Viaduct was backfilled with mine waste because it had become unstable due to subsidence. The branch line to Boulby Potash Mine still runs at the top of the man made embankment above the culvert.

Kilton Viaduct
Well actually the viaduct was buried in 1913 when it was found to be unstable due to mining subsidence. The railway was built in 1867 by the North Eastern Railway company as an extension to the Cleveland Railway from Carlin How to Loftus. It is still in use today as a mineral branch line to the Boulby Potash Mine.
