Coastal path above Newdowns Head
We are high above Newdowns Head. The path makes a track through moorland like this. The view leads us towards Trevaunance Cove in Image

Two capped shafts east of Bawden Farm
This simple, cheap but effective method of capping shafts is seen in a number of old mine workings around this headland. The steel cage will prevent sheep & cattle falling in, likewise humans unless (they're very determined) but I guess allows access for bats.

Waste ground at Polberro
This area was part of Polberrow Mine so although it is shown on the map as publicly accessible caution needs to be exercised as there could be mine shafts hidden under the attractive carpet of gorse and heather. In the distance are Penhale Point and Gull Rocks Image

Mine shafts near Newdowns Head
I'm speculating that these wire grilles are covering the heads of mine shafts to prevent animals from falling down them. They are about 20 metres below the coastal path on a rather precipitous part of the cliff. In the background are the Bawden Rocks or Man and his Man in Image

Mineshafts on the Clifftop
Old mine shafts to the east of Newdowns head have the standard cover of a cones mesh which makes their location visible and obvious and allows bats into the shafts to roost.

The SW Coast Path west of Polberro Cove
Narrow but well defined, here it makes a fine walk through the heather and old mining interest.
