The spirit of the Yew tree
The knot in the ancient tree in the churchyard at Holne resembles the caricature face of a spirit. Yew trees were grown in medieval times as a protection against evil but were also used for summoning spirits in the culture of magic. Yew is extremely poisonous.

Churchyard Holne
The churchyard of St Mary the Virgin has several ancient yews, one of which is completely hollow and has had its crown removed in order to help preserve it. The church is 13th century and is where Charles Kingsley the historian and novelist, who was the son of the vicar of Holne, was baptised in 1819.
