The Old Manor House and Wolborough Street, Newton Abbot
The Manor House is listed Grade II, listing no.1256747. Mastermap says it's a club. The sign outside announces the premises of a local newspaper, the Mid-Devon Advertiser. English Heritage says, inter alia: "House, now offices. C17 with early C19 and C20 alterations. Probably cob under painted stucco to the front, rendered to the sides and rear; slate roof with massive stacks to the gable ends. An early example of this centralized plan form in this region". Massive chimney stacks are a feature of older buildings in South Devon. I'm guessing that they were built to carry sparks and cinders well clear of thatched roofs. The turning on the left is Gothic Road. The grey-green building along the street is Barchington House.

Barchington House, 77 Wolborough Street, Newton Abbot
Listed Grade II, listing no.1256714. English Heritage says: "Early/mid 19th century house, now offices". Of the arch around the entrance they note that "a wide semi-elliptical arched recess with vermiculated Coadestone voussoirs and headmask to the centre has C20 carved set-back double doors to the centre". The doors bear the numbers 77, right, and 75, left.

Not listed, unlike several of the houses across the street, but ain't they sweet? The combination of cool grey stone and warm orange brick is appealing. The stone is local Devonian limestone as random rubble, I believe it's called – but note the larger squared quoins at the near corner. The contrasting neat brick surrounds – dressings, I think they're called – to doors and windows will have been locally made. There are two other views at
