Bailiffs Sergeant, 30 Jefferstone Lane
This is the only pub in the small village of St. Mary's Bay. It is a Shepherd Neame house. They are Britain's oldest brewers, having commenced business in 1698, in Faversham, Kent. They are a family run business, and the Neame family have been involved continuously since 1864 up to the present day. They now have over 360 pubs. Image Image

Bailiffs Sergeant pub sign, 30 Jefferstone Lane
The pub's sign is fixed to a pole outside the pub. The unusual name, almost certainly unique to this pub, derives from the company entrusted by King Henry III, by charter, to take responsibility for the drainage and embankments in Romney Marsh. Image Image

Bailiffs Sergeant, 30 Jefferstone Lane
The village of St. Mary's Bay, initially called Jesson, developed in the 20th century, and the early decades after the Second World War saw its heyday as a popular holiday resort. The changing fashion for holidays abroad contributed to the village's decline as a resort. Consequently it has lost most of the facilities one would expect in a resort. However the pub has survived. It used to be a farmhouse. Image Image
