Ashford Museum
You need a map to find it as it's well hidden away in the back of Ashford High Street. The Ashford Borough Museum is in the St.Mary's Churchyard. The building was originally built in 1635 by Sir Norton Knatchbull to house the newly founded Ashford Grammar School. It is next to the Tourist Information Office (left). It contains exhibits of photographs of old Ashford, Ashford at War, local archaeological and geological discoveries, artefacts from an old established Ashford pharmacy plus exhibits of every day life. There are two floors of exhibits. It still contains most of the Great Chart War Exhibition artefacts. Copies and transcripts of some of the Letters to the Friends of Great Chart can be found in 3 lever arch files near the door. The originals are at the Centre for Kentish Studies in Maidstone. Manned by volunteers, open April to October only. Admission is free, but don't forget your donation on the way out.

Ashford High Street
Looking closely at the Lloyds TSB building, at maximum resolution, you might be able to pick out lines of small upward facing steel spikes on all the ledges. Presumably to keep pigeons away. 2 are already sitting there, and a third is alighting. The spikes seem to have allowed the grass to grow well! I suspect the Ernest Jones building was also a bank not so many years ago.
