An old electricity sub station at Oakengates. The faint remains of the lettering on the plinth read "W.M.J.E.A." which I believe stands for "West Midland Joint Electricity Authority" and which indicates a date circa.1930s.

Arriva buses wait at Oakengates' small bus station on service 55 which runs between central Telford and Wellington.

Mining in Oakengates had ended many years before this 1967 photograph, but its scars are still evident in the landscape. At the left, a Ferris wheel is seen showing that there was a fair in the town, and right in the centre one of H. Brown's stylish Sentinel single-deck buses (in fact they were coaches) can be seen in the small Stafford Road bus station. H. Brown was the largest operator of Sentinel buses in Britain - he had eight!

This photograph shows vehicles owned by H. Brown. He had some eight vehicles by the local Shropshire builders Sentinel, of which two had bus-type front entrance bodies while the other six were coaches with, originally, a centre entrance, later converted to front-entrance to allow for one man operation. Both types are represented here, the front vehicle being one of the buses and the rear, one of the coaches. From Oakengates, H. Brown operated local bus services to such destinations as Muxton Corner, Donnington, and Trench. I doubt whether he ever made much money from these (of course, unsubsidised) bus routes: fares were very cheap, for example Oakengates to the White Horse at Wrockwardine Wood cost 2d (two old pence).

One of H. Brown's stylish Sentinel coaches which he used on the local bus routes from Oakengates to Donnington and other nearby places. These vehicles had a centre entrance, and, unbelievably in these days, Brown had a conductress aboard to issue your ticket. Fares were very cheap, and it is doubtful whether much profit was made. But Harold Brown was an enthusiast: his coach trip to Manchester cost only 7s 6d return! (about 37p in modern money)
