Streets of the town 1 - Much Wenlock 1, Shropshire
The history of Much Wenlock stretches back to Roman times, beyond AD 680 when Milburga founded a monastery for monks and nuns and in 1224 was granted a weekly market. In 1540 however, Wenlock Priory was dissolved in the general Dissolution which took place at this time, when Henry VIII got the Abbey habit*. Dr William Penny Brookes, the founder of the Wenlock Olympian Games, was born here on 13th August 1809 and the first Games took place in 1850. The Guildhall, which incorporates the Courthouse, is open from April to October and is worth a visit. This view is of Shineton Street - not sure whether it is 'Shin-eton' or 'Shine-ton'. *The Abbey habit refers to a one-time television advertisement for the now-vanished Abbey National building society. Taken at 2.43 pm BST (British Summer Time).

Much Wenlock: Bastard Hall
A fine, 15th-century house in Sheinton Street, most recently used as a guest house but currently up for sale. Its now slightly amusing name derives from Richard de Bastard, who owned, in the 13th century, the house which this one replaced after a fire destroyed it.

55 & 57, Sheinton Street, Much Wenlock
Parts of this building date back to the 13th century, but those are at the rear and not easily seen. It is otherwise mainly a late 15th century rubblestone and timber framed cottage, with an early 16th century upper storey. It was granted a Grade II listing in 1950, so its importance has been recognised for many years; the details are at https://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101053791-55-57-sheinton-street-much-wenlock#.WPvFBdQrLGg
