Shifnal's former fire station - now the town museum
14 years on from Image, but recognisably the same building. It's been spruced up and re-purposed as a town museum and 'heritage'/information centre, and usually has a good collection of local historical photos and info on display. It suffered a bit of flooding (somewhat ironically, as a former fire station) last winter, and of course its opening hours have been somewhat curtailed by the 2020/2021 Covid-19 pandemic.

Fire Insurance plaque - Shifnal's old fire station
This is not an original feature of the building, as it makes no appearance in Image (and anyway, who'd insure a fire station against fire in those days?) It's presumably been relocated here from another building in the town, as the old fire station now serves as a small museum and information centre. Vintage Fire Plaques, such as this 'Sun' version, were used as visual evidence from the late 17th century onwards that the building was covered by one of the fire-extinguishing services of the time, there being no national service at that point. The 'Sun' company presumably lives on as (Royal) Sun Alliance.

Fire Insurance plaque - Shifnal's old fire station
The second Fire Insurance Plaque now affixed to the front wall of Image, a relatively recent addition. Fire Plaques, such as this 'Salop' version, were used as visual evidence from the late 17th century onwards that the building was covered by one of the fire-extinguishing services of the time, there being no national service at that point. The Salop Fire company was presumably based at Image in Shrewsbury, as the inscription above one of the doors of that building says 'Salop Fire Office'

Demolition work soon to start
Image as seen in 2008 has been approved for demolition, and the site is to be redeveloped for housing. Here, in May 2018, the scaffolding had been erected to allow some of the structure to be dismantled in a controlled manner, and the bricks were to be cleaned & stacked, possibly for re-use in the subsequent homes. We will see what happens with that theory in the next few months.

Demolition work pretty much complete
It's clearly end of days for Image, seen just before the work started in Image Over the last fortnight or so, some of the bricks have been salvaged, possibly for re-use in the replacement buildings, but a couple of days ago a small excavator vehicle was perched on top of the pile of rubble, presumably having spent the day merrily just knocking the remaining walls down. All that seems to have been preserved is the grave of a former minister at the chapel, who's buried outside the front and whose grave has been covered over with a plywood box for protection during these works. It remains to be seen whether he'll stay there in the front garden of the forthcoming house(s)

Charles King Court (The old Baptist Chapel & former Magistrates' Court)
What was once the semi-derelict, mid-19th century Image was condemned to demolition a year or so ago Image & Image The site has now been redeveloped by the Shropshire Towns and Rural Housing organisation, using a firm of local builders who have erected two units on site. These contain a total of 7 flats split between this building at the front of the site, and the one behind it which is partially obscured here. The facade of the front building has not yet been completed, but the scaffolding here is apparently in place to enable it to be rendered in such a way as to very much resemble the original chapel seen in Image (only without the ivy, presumably). My observations in early June 2018 about the grave of the former minister are borne out by the sight in this picture of the protective plywood capping/box over his grave, just visible lower right. He will make a fine feature in the front garden!

Charles King Court pretty much complete
A couple of months after Image and the external rendering has been completed & painted, and whilst there may be a bit of snagging work still to be done, the construction is effectively complete. The artist's impressions of the finished buildings, which have been displayed on a signboard outside for a year or so, suggest that there was an intent to restore the facade much as the original seen in Image, but clearly it's been given a 'cleaner' frontage instead. The two graves of former preachers at the site, which was at one time a Methodist chapel, have been preserved in the front garden; protected by a plywood cover during all the construction work, they are now surrounded by some railings. This, and another new building behind it, comprise a series of 1- and 2-bedroom flats which will shortly be for sale.

Charles King Court is now complete, and up for sale
Completing the story described in Image and a handful of photos prior to that, the development of flats now known as Charles King Court is now complete, with all the trimmings and architectural details added to the facade as shown in the 'Artist Impression' drawings which were displayed during construction. The building is named after Charles King, a local seedsman, who obtained permission from the Diocese of Lichfield to build the original Zion Methodist Chapel and Image which this replaces. As a Magistrates' Court from soon after the war, that served the Shifnal petty division parishes of Albrighton, Boningale, Boscobel, Donington, Kemberton, Ryton, Tong and Shifnal, and closed to public use in the early 1980s; lying empty until 2018 when it was demolished Image to make way for this replacement.

Military Auxiliary Hospital in Shifnal
Once known as Hildern House, but now simply 15 Shrewsbury Road, this cottage served as a convalescent home and Auxiliary Hospital after WWI, looking after injured servicemen. It opened as a hospital in March 1917, with 15 beds. A legacy of poems and sketches by some of the residents is now kept in the local museum, housed in the former Fire Station a few doors along the road in the Image, which has been refurbished since that particular photo was taken.
