The Coble Cauld, Hawick
This weir across the River Teviot was built to supply water to the textile mills. The information board explains its history and the annual Common Riding, which includes a ceremonial dipping of the town flag into the pool, commemorating the capture of an English flag here in 1514. The Coble Cauld on the River Teviot, Hawick
This popular spot is ideal for watching salmon jump as they make their way up the River Teviot to spawn.
The 'cauld' is a reminder of Hawick's industrial past. It is designed to force water into an artificial channel (lade) which starts below this point and exits almost a kilometre down river. The water was used to power the textile mills that were built in the late 18th and early 19th century.
