Old petrol pumps outside closed-down garage

New unmanned self-service fuel pumps and an electric charging point that replace a former derelict filling station; residents otherwise had round trips of between 20 and 45 miles to the nearest fuel. Compare with Image taken 1 year ago.

North Hermitage Street, Newcastleton
Known locally as Copshaw Holm, Newcastleton was laid out in 1793 to the plan of Mr Keir of Whithaugh for the 3rd Duke of Buccleuch as a handloom-weaving village with gridded streets and lanes. This is the main route through the village viewed from the northeast end of Douglas Square.

Notice - Newcastleton Community Fuel Pumps Project
Located at the garage shown in this photo, taken in 2008 Image . Since it closed down, Newcastleton residents have faced a round trip of around 40 miles to refuel. An initiative by the Newcastleton & District Community Trust http://newcastletoncommunitytrust.co.uk/ should soon see the old building demolished, and new self-service pumps installed on the site. Information update : The new pumps were ready for use in March 2018. See Image .

Spar shop, Newcastleton
Convenience store containing the Post Office, which used to be in Langholm Street Image . Legends function rooms are on the upper floor. When Google Street View passed by in 2009 the building was occupied by the Royal British Legion Scotland. Previously it was the TUC Mechanics Hall, recorded on a plaque in the gable, dated 1898.
