The first house in Hawick
As you enter Hawickon the B6399 this is the first house you see. It is quite likely to remain so as the valley is narrow and very twisty it is unlikely that houses could be built further out.

Site of birthplace of 'Old Mortality', Hawick
Now at the edge of a recent housing development, the plaque was presumably taken from a now demolished building. It commemorates the birthplace of Robert Paterson, a stonemason born near here in 1712 who inspired Sir Walter Scott's 'Old Mortality', one of the Waverley novels published in 1816. The road in the background is named Paterson Gardens.
