This is a view to the southwest end of Hawick towards Crumhaugh Hill from Miller’s Knowes on the southeast side of the town. Hawick sits in the valley of the River Teviot and is the largest town in the Scottish Borders. The town is famous for textiles although this industry has been in decline for several years.

Most of the town can be seen in this view from a Glasgow bound flight from Prague at around 19,000 feet overhead. The River Teviot is the main feature, with Slitrig Water seen joining it from the lower right corner. The A7 road heading north out of the town can be seen at the top.

Now at the edge of a recent housing development, the plaque was presumably taken from a now demolished building. It commemorates the birthplace of Robert Paterson, a stonemason born near here in 1712 who inspired Sir Walter Scott's 'Old Mortality', one of the Waverley novels published in 1816. The road in the background is named Paterson Gardens.
