A closer look at the plaque shown in Image Now at the edge of a recent housing development, the plaque was presumably taken from a now demolished building. It commemorates the birthplace of Robert Paterson, a stonemason born near here in 1712 who inspired Sir Walter Scott's 'Old Mortality', one of the Waverley novels published in 1816. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Paterson_(stonemason) for further information on Robert Paterson. There is a discrepancy between the year of Paterson's birth (1712) given on the plaque and both 1715 and 1716 given on the Wikipedia web page.
