Albert Place, Galashiels
Viewed from Lawyers' Brae, this shows a mixture of building types at Albert Place. On the left is the end of the Burgh Chambers building (1867) with the former sculptors shop and yard of Sutherland and Sons (now John Scott Fireplaces) on the right. Beyond on the right is a facing brick extension (1976) to the Burgh Chambers, accessed from Paton Street. Part of the colourful facade of the new TESCO superstore is visible beyond the Burgh Chambers buildings and a recent housing scheme can be seen on Blaikie's Hill in the far distance.

Galashiels Burgh Buildings
The Burgh Chambers date back to 1867 while the Clock-tower and War Memorial, designed by Sir Robert Lorimer, was added in 1924-7. The equestrian statue of a mosstrooper, a Border reiver, was sculpted by Thomas J Clapperton. This is a view from Cornmill Square with an elaborately carved column in the foreground forming part of the Cornmill Square fountain. A corn mill on this site was demolished and the mill lades transformed into a balustraded water feature in 1912-13 by Sir Robert Lorimer. The mill lade in Paton Street
The site of Mid Mill, built in 1793 and demolished in 1948, but the stone foundation and channel of the waterwheel remain. The site was previously occupied by one of three waulkmills in existence in 1581. The clock tower in the background forms part of the Burgh Buildings. The three mill lades in the town, this being the main one, are a reminder of the times when the Gala Water powered the textile mills. 28 weaving mills once operated along the Gala Water valley, but a decline in the textile industry set in after the Second World War, and the majority of the mill buildings have been demolished or renovated for multiple occupancy.
