The Burgh Chambers date back to 1867 while the Clock-tower and War Memorial, designed by Sir Robert Lorimer, was added in 1924-27. The equestrian statue of a mosstrooper, a Border reiver, was sculpted by Thomas J Clapperton. (Source: Borders and Berwick, An Illustrated Architectural Guide by Charles Alexander Strang).
