Burgh of Duns Mercat (Market) Cross
There has been a mercat cross at Duns since 1489 when it was created a Burgh of Barony in the name of the Home family of Ayton. At that time, the town was situated a little to the north of the present town centre, near Duns Law. In 1517, Sieur de la Bastie, the Warden of the East March, was murdered by Home of Wedderburn Castle who proceeded to pin the Frenchman's head to the mercat cross.
