Big Tree memorial stone, Cossington
Since Image was taken, a monolith has been erected with a relief plaque of the great tree, "a mighty 80ft high Elm Tree which dominated the centre of the village ... with its branches spreading out across the roads. It was felled due to terminal disease in 1977" http://www.cossingtonparishcouncil.org.uk/big-tree/4591603797 .

Site of Cossington Great Tree
In the Monmouth Rebellion of 1685, it is reputed that some of the rebels were hung on the Great Tree of Cossington. Nearby Great Tree Farm takes its name from the site

A stone edifice for a big tree
Cossington's famous old tree once stood at this spot and held sway for many generations. Sadly it's time came to an end and a sapling replanted also did not last. This stone monument marks the history but is topped off with some less than original stone novelties.

Old Milestone, Middle Road, by Manor Road junction
The milestone is now located by the telephone box, back from the road under the tree, on the north side of road. The original location is unknown but is possibly the M5 junction near Puriton. Parish of Cossington (Sedgmoor District). Metal plate attached to stone post, Bridgwater small iron plate design, erected by the Bridgwater turnpike trust in the 18th century. Inscription reads:- 4 Miles to B.Water Milestone Society National ID: SO_BGHB04A
