Scott Gould House
Somerton has two almshouses bestowed on it. In the seventeenth century Sir Edward Hext had built eight homes for poor men. Later came Mrs Sophie Scott Gould of North Curry, a widow who worked as a housekeeper in a large house locally. It appears that she was in receipt of a large financial sum, which she used to found these almshouses for women only (in contrast to Hext). Opened in 1866, and restored in 1981; Grade II listed.
