Lych gate, St Mary's Church, Huish Episcopi
Many churches have a lych gate built over the main entrance to the enclosed area round the church. The name, also spelt lich or lytch, is from the Anglo Saxon 'lich' meaning corpse. The gate marks the division between consecrated and unconsecrated ground, where the bearers sheltered with the coffin, waiting for the clergyman to lead the procession before the burial. The original lych gates had seats, a lych cross and a lych stone - a slab on which the coffin rested.

Burne-Jones Window at St Mary the Virgin, Huish Episcopi, Somerset
This is a central detail from the beautiful window showing a nativity scene, and designed by Edward Burne-Jones, one of the foremost Pre-Raphaelite artists. The window is not easy to view or photograph, partly due to the intrusiveness of the protective steel mesh outside the window, and partly due to difficulty with the lighting. This is a shame, as the window is very beautiful, and the wonderful design is by one of our best artists in his prime. There are innumerable details to admire, from the musical instruments held by three angels at the top left, the folds of the robes of Mary and the kneeling angels with their unusual red wings, the figures of the shepherds and the wise men, even the grass at the foot of the window.

Church of St Mary the Virgin, Huish Episcopi, Somerset
The tower has an unusual decoration for an English church. The south transept window seen below the tower here is the notable window showing the nativity, by Edward Burne-Jones. I have tried to capture that artwork at Image The north transept also has a fine window from the early twentieth century.

Socially distanced supplication
The south porch of St Mary's church is believed to be one of the oldest parts. Historic England describes it thus: 'South porch, adjoining chapel, probably C14 plain chamfered arch to outside, under flat plain parapet; inside arched recess in west wall, to hold parish bier; in east wall a trefoiled niche; inner wall has elaborate C12 doorway, heavily discoloured by fire, with double-order chevroned semi-circular arch under dog-tooth label, plain tympanum with some diaper work, lower portion triangular voussoired; outer shafts chevron, middle shafts plain and tympanum shafts with twist moulds, bases and carved caps.' Other than that, the now-ubiquitous social distancing signs are very much contemporary.

Huish Episcopi, St Mary's tower
The fine tower is a fifteenth century construction, added to the church buildings of twelfth century origination. The four stages are a feature of Somerset churches and this is a particularly good example. Grade I listed.
