Flooded stile crossing in February
My poor wife is stranded in the hedgeline by floodwaters at the stile. I have just crossed, and misjudging the depth of the mud beneath the floodwater I got one wet foot for my trouble. I then had to find a field gate, circle back behind my wife and take her with me to safety and drier ground. We soon got back on the path and if we had been wearing gaiters we would have been fine, keeping our feet dry, but neither of us wore or brought any gaiters today. Just one of the many hazards of being regular walkers. It is rare for us to have an incident-free walk. I often slip, trip or fall. An occasional wet foot keeps you on your toes. I have split trousers, caught my waterproofs on barbed wire, slipped on a stony riverbed, sunk pelvis deep in a peat bog and fallen literally head first in a Welsh mountain stream. But I am still here and keep coming back for more. My wife is far more cautious, risk-averse and considered and seems to have far fewer incidents. I should take a leaf out of her book...

Wet meadow near Fenemere Manor farm
The farm is visible in the distance. This field is saturated after a rainy period earlier in the month. It is comparable to a paddy-field to walk across, making us circle around to secure the shallowest flood levels as the path line was too deep underwater for our walking boots. I put up three Snipe which took off in their jinking flight from my very feet as I sploshed and sloshed along. I was sorry to disturb them and anxious that they might return we hurried on.
