Shire Hall, Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury
Shrewsbury might be expected to have opted for traditional civic buildings, most likely neo-Georgian, but instead the county council opted for a commendably modern complex, heavily influenced by Plymouth's. To the fore is the Portland stone council chamber, a "truncated ovoid raised up on stout convex pilotis". Built in 1963-66 to the designs of the County Architect, Ralph Crowe.

Lord Hill's Column, Shrewsbury
Lord Hill's Column was built in honour of Lord Hill (1772-1842), an aristocrat and army officer. The monument used to stand in the centre of a road junction. The monument hasn't moved, it is the roads which have been remodelled to pass to the side of the monument. The A458 and A5064 meet at this junction.

Shire Hall, Shrewsbury
One of those ground breaking, mould breaking 1960's buildings aimed at being futuristic, efficient and long-lasting. But having a flat roof, windows that allow it to be cold in winter and over hot in summer and designed in such a way that as a first time visitor youre never totally sure where the main entrance door is. Nothing says ' faceless bureaucracy' more than a county hall type building of this date.

Council Chamber, Shire Hall, Shrewsbury
The circular concrete building in front of the office block is the council chamber. Note that since Shropshire became a unitary authority in 2009 it is no longer Shropshire County Council, but simply Shropshire Council. Members sit here in semi-circular rows.
