Viewed from Short Bridge. Built in 1834 on the site of an 18th century mill, Bridgend Flannel Mill was the last mill in Llanidloes to close. It made use of water power with carding machines below and looms and spinning machines on the upper floors. Poor working conditions and periodic depression in the industry, gave rise to Chartist riots in Llanidloes in 1839 which resulted in the imprisonment and in three instances the transportation of those held guilty of fomenting the disturbances. The building, once used as a boys club, has now been converted into apartments.

Built from 1839-40 by William Jerman of Llanidloes for the flannel manufacturer Edward Hughes, manager of the Flannel Mill (situated opposite this house) from 1834-45. This building is also known as Bridgend House and Highgate House.

Bridgend Flannel Mill on left

Built in 1834 by Mrs Cole of Glanclywedog on the site of a factory from the 18th century, the building was given alterations in the mid 19th century. William Morris and Sons occupied the mill by 1908, and ownership later passed on to two Frenchmen. The mill went through a major fire in January 1937, which led to its conversion as the Boy's Club; this is the last surviving example of an intact woollen mill in Llanidloes, and is now private housing.

Here is the River Severn from a road bridge adjacent to the old Flannel Mill (seen to the left of this picture), and Llanidloes is the first town the River Severn passes through.

This OS cut mark can be found on the SW parapet of the Short Bridge. It marks a point 167.153m above mean sea level.
