Ice on New Year's Day
For the second day running I have removed the ice from the bird bath and topped it up with water. It's a little warmer today so may remain fluid.
Access to water is very important to birds in icy weather, not just to drink, but to keep themselves clean and fluffed up for warmth.
The birdbath is a plastic scallop shell, perched on a (leaning) pole (hence the shape of the ice) stuck in the ground outside my kitchen window, possibly not the most sensible place in the winter as a sunny spot might melt any ice more quickly, but I like to see the small birds using it. I put a larger dish on the ground for the larger birds - they need help too.
