The very fine piers, railings and lamps outside the entrance to the museum. The Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London, exhibits a vast range of specimens from various segments of natural history. It holds 80 million items within five main collections: botany, entomology, mineralogy, palaeontology and zoology. The museum originated from collections within the British Museum. The main building was opened in 1881, it was extended to the north-west in 1931 by the addition of the Whale Hall. The former Geology Museum to the north-east of 1933 was later incorporated, forming the Earth Galleries.
