St Bede's centre, Clapham Road
Opened 1924 as St Bede's Church for the Deaf and Dumb, in more recent years it was a Sports and Social Club for deaf people, but that closed in 2004 and I am unsure of its present use.

St John, Clapham Road
A mighty portico of six fluted Ionic columns and pediment. Built 1840-42 by T. Marsh Nelson. Grade II listed. Beyond, no. 384 (Carlton Mansions), is a good example of a large suburban Victorian villa, complete with tall mansard roof.

This imposing building with a classical portico is an Anglican church and still licensed for worship, though it has been extensively altered inside as of 2011 it was not being used for Sunday services, rather as a base for the St John's Community Project. It was built in 1840-42, the architect being Thomas Marsh Nelson. The building is listed grade 2 (list entry 1080479). For another external view see Image

Portico of St John's church
A close-up view of the classical portico of this church, which is one of the latest examples in London of this style of church architecture: by 1840 most architects were embracing neo-gothic. The church is grade 2 listed and an extract from the list description describes it more precisely: "Hexastyle Ionic portico and pediment over entablature, both enriched with egg and dart moulding. Three entrances, the central very tall in moulded architrave with paterae border and console bracketed cornice. Entablature continues around South window returns with cill band and stone plinth, greyish brick walls." For a context to this photo see Image

Interior of St John's church
A view from the gallery showing how the church has been partitioned off with a small worship area at the far (east) end and a larger hall at the west end. [The reason for cropping the bottom of the photo was to avoid showing children in the hall without parental permission]. For the context of this photo see Image
