The Cedars, Clapham Common North Side
James Knowles's startling pair of blocks dominate local views. Built in 1860, their "French pavilion roofs are amongst the first signs of that French Renaissance Revival in London", but it's not all good: "the details are robust and tasteless; note especially the barbarous, wholly un-French, round-headed window surrounds". Grade II listed.

Thornton Place, Clapham Common North Side
One of the reasons Clapham Common has survived is through its popularity with the wealthy and influential as a place to reside and hence protect from development. Many of their houses dating from the 18th and early 19th centuries still surround the common. The Georgian unity of Clapham Common North Side is to quote Pevsner "broken with typically mid Victorian assertiveness by .. The Cedars, two identical five-storey blocks flanking the entrance to Cedars Road." This is the western one of the pair, seen from the common. It has recently been converted into '32 luxury apartments' and called Thornton Place. The chimneys are particularly impressive.

Apartments by the Common
With a view overlooking Clapham Common, these smart Victorian apartment blocks must have always been valuable property. I doubt that has changed. The one on the right has a blue plaque recording that Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg "stayed here when performing in London."
