The site of Tulse Hill Comprehensive School
The houses beyond the playground are in Marnfield Crescent. This was originally the site of Tulse Hill Comprehensive, one of the largest schools in London, with over 2,000 boys. It opened in 1956, closed in 1990, and was demolished in the early 1990s. 1 Palace Road
Originally known as Clinton House when it was built, probably c1884. It was the home of the writer Dennis Wheatley from 1914-30. Information from the Streatham Society (http://www.streathamsociety.org.uk/Streatham%20Society%20news%2011-09.pdf ). Palace Road has a few surviving large late-C19th/early-C20th houses. Although this one has seen happier days, it is still attractive, possessing some typical Arts-and-Craft style flourishes - tile-hung upper storey, shell-hood porch and pargetted dormer.
