The last few premises at the Tooting Broadway end of Garratt Lane are occupied by various small businesses, including a Men's Grooming Lounge. (what we used to call a barber shop, I believe)

This is taken looking diagonally opposite the entrance to the Underground station. The A217 and the A24 cross here. The cyclist, who is on the (blue) Cycling Superhighway (pause for sardonic laughter), will not be pleased to find his way blocked further along Tooting High Street by a large number of parked vehicles.

Tooting Broadway station in South London is on London Underground's Northern Line. The station opened in 1926. Ironically, three other Underground lines go further north then the Northern Line, yet the Northern reaches the furthest south. The statue in front of the station is of King Edward VII.

View SE, towards Mitcham on A217 Mitcham Road, junction with A24 Tooting High Street. The station is on the LUL Northern Line: Morden right; left to Kennington and, via Charing Cross or Bank, to Edgware/High Barnet. (Cf. Image]).

The station was opened on 13 September 1926 as part of the Morden extension of the City & South London Railway south from Clapham Common. Along with the other stations on the Morden extension, the building was designed by architect Charles Holden. They were Holden's first major project for the Underground.the modernist design takes the form of a double-height curving screen clad in white Portland stone with a three-part glazed screen in the centre of the façade divided by columns of which the capitals are three-dimensional versions of the Underground roundel. The central panel of the screen contains a large version of the roundel. The bronze statue of Edward VII on a granite plinth predates the Northern line’s arrival by 15 years and was erected by public subscription.
