Putney: Polski Kości?ł Sw Jana Ewangelisty
This is the Polish Roman Catholic Church of St. John the Evangelist (Polski Kościół Sw Jana Ewangelisty) in St John's Road viewed from the Burston Road side. The Church is quite difficult to photograph in the summer because the St John's Road and much of the Burston Road sides have dense tree cover in front of them. It is listed Grade 2. This was originally built by the Church of England as a chapel of ease of St Mary, Putney Image, at the expense of J.L. Leander MP. It was consecrated in 1859. It was damaged by bombing in 1944, not reopening until 1948; Replacement glazing was by Francis H Spear. It was leased to the Polish Roman Catholic Church in 1977, long before the large influx of Polish workers to the UK in the 2000s. The proceeds of the lease (£80,000) went to rebuilding St Mary's after a fire. The freehold was granted to the Catholics in 2007.
