Georgian fa?ade, Barnes Terrace
One of the smaller properties in this somewhat higgledy-piggledy terrace. The upper storey must surely be original (unaltered), but also shows originality in design terms - almost like some detail from an Oxford college barge. But I also detect a whiff of Venice, or New Orleans. The ground floor has plainly been altered, but - above the window - retains a pretty iron frieze. Projections on either side look as if they once supported an awning. Along with the (slightly) bowed window (is it old?) they suggest to me that this was once a shop. Notice the three steps up to the front door - this shot was taken from the riverside and the area was prone to flooding until river defences were raised (in the 1980's, I think). The three steps up will doubtless be matched by three steps down once you're across the threshold - matching an arrangement often found on footpaths close to this stretch of the Thames http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2227759
