Balham Underground station
A detail of the window illuminating the western entrance: standard in this design of station, dating from London Transport's great design period of the interwar years, is the way a three-dimensional version of the Underground roundel is used as a capital on the columns.

Pedestrian crossing outside Balham Underground station
The digits to the right of the light array light up when the green man goes out and count down from 30 to 0; at this point the red man appears. Last minute hurriers thus know exactly how long they have before the traffic on Balham High Road is unleashed.
