Majestic Wine Warehouse, Balham Hill
This art deco building is on the corner of Balham Hill and Malwood Road. It didn't start out as a retail unit. This building was originally constructed as the Odeon Cinema in April 1938. It suffered extensive damage to the facade during an air raid in October 1940, which was repaired in 1948. Although the auditorium was demolished in May 1985 the Art Deco facade remains.

Church of the Ascension: foundation or consecration stone
The purpose of this stone in the wall of the Ascension church, Balham Hill is not quite clear: it is a little too high up in the wall to be a true foundation stone although the date (1883) is seven years before the date quoted for the church's opening. The four crosses suggest that it marks the consecration of the church, but that would have been on completion in 1890, and one would then expect to see the name of the Bishop who performed the consecration. It names the architect, builder, Vicar, Churchwardens and MP. For context, see
