The Troubadour, Old Brompton Road
A coffee house which opened in 1954 and became an intellectual and artistic centre of bohemian Chelsea. Its website states that it is where the magazine 'Private Eye' was first produced and distributed; where the first 'Ban the Bomb' meetings were held that gave birth to the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament; and where the 'Black Panthers' regrouped after the 1968 Paris riots. It was also the first place where Bob Dylan performed in London. Other 'names' who have played here include Paul Simon, Martin Carthy, Charlie Watts, Sammy Davis jnr. and Jimi Hendrix. The actor Richard Harris "fell in love with his wife Elizabeth here (she was doing the washing up)"; film-director Ken Russell recruited staff for his first short films and became friends with actor Oliver Reed here. Led Zeppelin jammed here after their Earl’s Court gigs, and Tom Robinson and Elvis Costello have played here too. And I had a coffee here!
