Cruising south-east of Middleport, Stoke-on-Trent
This is the Trent and Mersey Canal, looking south-east as the canal meanders towards Etruria. The narrowboat is heading for Middleport, and maybe the Harecastle Tunnel to Kidsgrove. The apartment development is in Sunny Bank by Middleport Park and extends to land formerly occupied by the Newport and Mersey Potteries. Clarice Cliff worked at the Newport factory (sold in 1964 to Midwinter's, merged with Meakin's in 1968, absorbed by Wedgwood in 1970, and demolished in the late 1990s).

Oliver's Mill, Newport Lane, Burslem
This is still a working mill producing raw material for the pottery industry. It retains three preserved calcining kilns, one of bottle form. this is used for calcining stone or bone and not for firing pots (there appears to be confusion as to what's a bottle oven and what's not).
