Proscenium arch of the Sandonia
The plaster motif above the arch appears to feature a comedy mask above a shield depicting a castle, flanked by twin nymphs playing the aulos, a double-reeded wind instrument.

Sandonia Theatre, Sandon Road, Stafford
Having this rather apocalyptic scene suddenly emerge around the corner of an innocent terraced housing block was quite a shock, having never encountered it before. The gaping hole and the decaying plaster decals above would have formed the stage area of the theatre, with the auditorium ahead of it. Needless to say, it is unnatural seeing all of this from outside; demolition of the auditorium had started, before being hurriedly stopped by the Council once they were informed.
