The Caldon Branch of the Trent and Mersey Canal opened in 1779. It runs eighteen miles from Etruria in Stoke-on-Trent, where it leaves the Trent and Mersey Canal. It terminates at Froghall about five miles south-east of Cheddleton. The canal has seventeen locks and the 69 metre long very low Froghall Tunnel, unusable by many narrowboats. The canal did originally continue through to Uttoxeter, but the section beyond Froghall was closed by the late 1840s, much of its course being filled in to construct a railway.

Ivy House Bridge Lifting, Caldon Canal, Hanley, Staffordshire
The bridge replaced a very heavy manually operated one in the 1980s. This one is controlled electrically by boat crews with a BWB key. The control panel operates automatically, but do keep your hand on the button or it pauses while you dream and wonder why nothing is happening. Here the bridge is already half up, so I can rev up and move forwards!

Ivy House Lift Bridge, Caldon Canal
This bridge is operated by boaters using a BWB key and a control panel - which is physically much easier than using a windlass. Here, the bridge is lowering following the passage of a boat.
