Former pump room, Hockley Spa
In 1838 a supposedly medicinal spring was discovered at Hockley and in 1842 a pump room designed by James Lockyer was built. In his architectural guide to Essex, Pevsner describes this building as "typical 1840s, in a chaste yet formal mood".

Hockley centre
Taken from Woodlands Road with Main Road (left), Spa Road (centre) and Southend Road (right). Road widening and the replacement of C19 terraced cottages with low-rise commercial premises have somewhat altered the appearance of the village over the last fifty years.

Hockley centre
Taken from Main Road showing Spa Road (left), Southend Road (centre) and Woodlands Road (right). Hockley has grown considerably in the last half century with newer low-rise buildings replacing terraced cottages and small shops. However 'The Spa Hotel' (left) has remained a constant feature over the years.
