Sunderland (Fawcett Street) railway station (site), Tyne & Wear
Opened in 1853 as the terminus of the North Eastern Railway's branch line from Penshaw, this station closed in 1879 when it was replaced by the current Sunderland (Central) railway station.
View north west across the site towards the city centre. The site has been comprehensively redeveloped - the railway line ran from left to right across the image, but about four storeys below the level of the car park! Just out of view to the far right, a plaque on the wall marks the former station entrance.

Havelock statue and cannons, Mowbray Park, Sunderland
The statue is one of two in the UK which commemorate Major General Sir Henry Havelock, who was born in Sunderland in 1795. The other statue is in Trafalgar Square, in the heart of London.

Park Lane Metro station, Tyne & Wear
Opened in 2002 by Tyne and Wear Metro.
Forecourt. The platforms are below the current ground level. In the background is the bus station.
Adjacent to the site of Fawcett Street railway station (1853-1879), now mostly buried under the Civic Centre.

Mowbray Park Railway Bridge
The recently restored and painted bridge crosses the route of the old Penshaw Railway. The railway opened in 1852 to link the collieries of Durham with the South Dock.

Former railway path, Mowbray Park, Sunderland
This path follows part of the course of a railway, which used to run to Sunderland's docks. Just beyond the end of the path, the railway used to enter a short tunnel.
