The Wooden Spoon, Downton
This is one of the newer inns of Downton, built in the late 18th century, and appropriately named the New Inn. In the 1960s it was taken over by Whitbreads, and they wished to rename it. At this time there was much local dispute and stirring up of feelings, so they decided upon the name of the Wooden Spoon. As far as the landlord knows, it is the only public house of this name in the country.

The High Street, Downton
Looking westward, from the corner of Moot Lane. The mill-like building in the distance was apparently a tannery until not so many years ago: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/324794. On the right, beyond the thatched buildings, is the 'Wooden Spoon'. This is the older part of the village. The 'newer' part - the Borough - lies further west on the far side of the Avon, and dates from the 13th century.

Cottage in the High Street, Downton
Part of an attractive little row, in a very pleasant street - but the brickwork is not as neat as it might be, and seems to have been renewed in piecemeal fashion.
