Eastern End of the Cursus
This looks west along the length of the Cursus - it used to stretches beyond the line of trees on the horizon, where a gap has been deliberately left. The odd lump and bump on the ground gives evidence of its existence - thought to be about 6000 years old, making it more ancient than nearby Stonehenge. Shaped like a long and thin racecourse, it was thought to be used for processions and parades.

Farm depot in the trees
The farmer had just arrived with his tractor and trailer, and was loading bags of fertiliser into the hopper. Later we passed the fields where it was being distributed. It had a very pungent smell.

Leaving the cursus
North of Stonehenge there is a large area of access land, mainly downland pasture. Across this for 1.75 miles runs the cursus, an ancient processional route. This is the eastern end where new gates and a stile have been erected to access the bridleway towards Strangways.

Entering the cursus
The cursus is a 1.75 mile long and 100 yard wide area on the open access land north of Stonehenge. The far end is at the trees in the misty far distance. It was once thought that it was a Roman race track but it is now believed to be a more ancient processional route. Nowadays there is little to be seen, except minor humps in ground, due to ploughing.
